Wooton Desk

H&B Gallery is proud to present:

Wooton Standard Grade Patent Desk, American, with walnut solids and burled veneers. Queen Anne Eastlake style with a balustered and paneled cresting with fan like supports. All four sides employ multiple raised panels indicating that the desk was meant to sit out. Grooved bracket footed platform on castors. The interior employs bird’s eye maple on the drop leaf panel and four drawer fronts. The right section has forty small box-like cardboard inserts. The left side has multiple filing and storage compartments. There are additional storage compartments under the facing at the top of the desk. The larger, drawer on the right side is signed on the bottom: “Zue Jackson, desk trimmer, Richmond Indiana, March 7, 1885.”  There are keys in the drawer. In the front section above the writing desk is an added copper insert with a drawer, buttons which could have been electrified, and both black and red inkwells.

Information from the consignor:

The family history of this desk: “The desk belonged to my great grandfather who was born in 1860, so he may well have been the original owner. He was a farmer, lawyer, and judge in North Carolina. I remember sitting with him at the desk in his office downtown while my mother ran errands. As he talked to his business associates and friends and smoked big smelly cigars, I was given the paper rings on the cigars to wear, which amused me greatly.  The desk came to me after my father’s death.

Dave Colglazier in White Bear Lake was the conservator who restored the desk. His name was given to me by the Minnesota Historical Society.  All but three of the cardboard drawers are original to the desk. The other three were added from other original Wooton desks. You’ll be able to spot them in the upper right hand corner. Various other minor repairs needed to be done and I can provide you with more detail if you feel you need it. Dave used a hand-rubbed finish, shellac, and even made his own glue! His instructions were never to use any kind of polish on the surface, just a soft clean rag.  Clearly, the leather on the desk has been replaced. In the tattered green box loose in there, you will find some of the trim that was on the original.

In the drawer with the keys you will find a pair of my great grandfather’s spectacles, the finials that go on the top of the desk (which were created – the original ones were missing), and an original little pull in a plastic bag which actually goes on the copper drawer (but when you put it on, it makes a dent in the leather writing desk, so not sure what to do about that!) The extra ancient house key I found in the desk as well and it seemed to belong, even though it doesn’t open anything around here. In the copper drawer are pen nibs and old Christmas stamps, also found right where they remain.”
